how to: the very hungry caterpillar t-shirt

1. purchase a plain white t-shirt (or onesie)
2. select materials for the body and face
3. cut those materials to rough shape adding 1/4” perimeter
4. iron down all edges creating a fold around the shape (it helps to snip corners and rounded parts) also, don’t worry if it’s not *perfect* - that’s the beauty of copying paper art as eric carle’s - it doesn’t need to be exact
5. pin ironed pieces to t-shirt
6. applique the body - each piece needs to be hand stitched individually with careful attention; i suggest stitching the head last so that it stays above the rest
7. i sketched the eyes, nose, legs and antenna with a micron pen, then used embroidery floss to give it the added dimension

i didn’t feel it looked quite finished, so i personalized the back - same technique as above, cutting out the number 1 for Sam’s age with an added 1/4” around the perimeter. I then snipped the inside corners, folded + ironed the 1/4” edge down, then pinned the 1 to the back of the shirt.  after using an invisible stitch to applique the 1, i wrote SAM with a micron and embroidered that.  voila!  it certainly took a good amount of time but Sam + his mama could tell how much love was put into it and all that hard work was very much appreciated
